Seamlessly Separate Hunter Douglas Blinds from Brackets! A How-To Guide

Many people find it necessary to remove their blinds from the blind brackets at some point, whether for cleaning, during painting, or perhaps just because you want the room to be brighter! But whatever the reason, this simple guide can help you learn how to easily remove your blinds from the brackets.

First things first! Grab a flat screwdriver, a butter knife, or other prying tool, and if you’re short like me, you might also need a stepladder.

 

• Adjust the blinds, using either the wand or one of the cords that controls them, such that the slats are parallel with the floor. When you are finished, you should be able to stand straight and look directly through the gaps in the blinds through the window in front of you.

• Next, pull the blinds all the way up to the top, so that the window is fully exposed. If you have single cord, you will need to pull it straight down until the blinds are fully raised. Without letting go of the cord, pull the cord to the center of the window down and diagonally. Then, let go. The blinds should stay up. If you have a knob or handle at the bottom of the blinds, simply pull the handle down until the blinds are fully closed, and then gently release the handle and let the blinds rise completely. This type of handle at the bottom of the blinds is also common for window shades in school classrooms, and they operate the same way. 
  
•  The next step is to remove the valence, the decorative headpiece above the blinds. First pull the valence down to free it from the valence clips, and then pull upwards to free it fully from the wall. If it has never been removed, you may have to jiggle the valence a bit to loosen it from the clips before you remove it.
  
  

• Now that you have removed the valence, the head rail above the blinds should be exposed. The brackets are on both sides of the head rail. If you need to, step up on your stepladder so that you can comfortably see and work with the brackets. You will need to push the bottom of the end bracket as you use the screwdriver to force the tab away from the bracket. Now, if the sizes of the blind slats are less than two inches, you will need to open the front tab out and to the side of the blinds. If the slat size is greater than two inches, then open the tabs directly upwards. Depending on the age and condition of the blinds, this task may require a bit of strength and dexterity. It may be helpful to grab another willing person (preferably a strong man!) to help pry the tab away from the bracket.

• Once you have opened the brackets, you will be able to easily slide the head rail out horizontally from the brackets, taking the Hunter Douglas blinds with it!
